What's causing the increase in the blurring effect on the shadow as it gets farther to the left (I guess my question would be how are the variations achieved)?

I think it's because in the original image on the left, the edge is more jagged on the left side than the right side. Even we use the PCF to filter the shadow, the jaggies on the left side are more outstanding than the right side. We might be able to mitigate it more by taking a larger box filter.
