Seeing as humans also lack color vision away from the focal point would it be possible to make the renderer more efficient by rendering grayscale away from the focus?

I think part of the reason why the scene needs higher contrast away from the focus is due to the higher number of rods that detect light and patterns of motion. My conjecture is that as long as there are heavy edges and high contrast away from the focus, then using grayscale would be a good way to increase efficiency.
