To clarify, the "diffuseness" of a surface has to do with how it reflects light, which contrasts from the notion of transparency/translucency, right? I'm curious if in a scene like this, are there techniques that could ray trace from a light source and pass-through or filter through a surface as well as reflect off a surface? I'd guess it would be extremely expensive but could look pretty realistic.

I'm a bit confused about how the greenish tint gets to be on the left side of the right rectangular prism since the left side is the one that would be facing the red side, so wouldn't it be more orangish?

I see that the top-left side of the rectangular prism is a little orangish. I think the greenish hue is visible because the left prism is blocking the light reflected off the red wall from hitting the bottom of the right prism. If you look closely, the left side of the right prism shows two colors being reflected.
