I saw an interesting alternate use for inverse kinematics at a recent hackathon--a team was using inertial measurement units (sensors which record acceleration and rotation) on a glove to track the positions of a user's hand/fingers. They were coming up with many different solutions to try to convert these sensor readings into a skeleton of the hand, one of which was using inverse kinematics to compute the hand's joint angles based on the positions of the fingertips.
