In actual implementations, do we always use t \in [0, 1] for each piecewise polynomial, or allow t to vary in its own domain and compute the bases by inverting some matrix?

I think we can always scale t to be in the range [0,1] by scaling or horizontally translating data or the final spline polynomial.
