What do you mean by you can't write down 4.5? I'm a little confused with what this slide is showing and would appreciate some intuition - can also ask on piazza!

Can someone explain the intuition behind why L* = Y^.45, why does luminance vs. perceived brightness create a graph of log form.

@m11 the equation for L* simply represents how the human eye roughly works, the reason why it perceives at a rate of roughly Y^0.45 is presumably so that it can tell differences in lighting better when there is relatively little light present, a reasonable adaptation for human function.
