Do manifold surfaces have an existing normal vector at all points? compared to not manifold surfaces?

Here is the soft/hard vertex normals in Maya when things became complicated.

@et17 The surface should be at least differentiable in order to calculate the normal (though I think in this course we assume all surfaces are smooth manifold?)
