How are non-manifold shapes typically handled in computer graphics? Do we typically do as much as possible to avoid these shapes?

ak5

What errors would these non-manifold shapes produce in rendering?

THWG

My understanding is that non-manifold surface cannot be easily subdivided, thus more difficult to render.

So... If I really want to render this guy, how do I do it...
