I don't know a ton about the mandelbrot set but I have watched several videos of it zooming in. Something interesting that they all seem to have in common is that at some point, a slightly off-center and rotated copy of the mandelbrot set will appear in pure black for a moment. It happened in the one we saw in class and it also happens in this one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSg2Db3jF_4) at 2:03. For some reason, when this pitch-block figure appears asymmetrically in what is usually otherwise a perfectly symmetrical and colorful picture it's existentially terrifying to me. What causes this to happen?
