Is this modeled using springs? Also there must be secondary mechanisms that are not modeled (friction, etc..) here because the movement of the cloth looks pretty fake to me (like it's much more elastic than it should be)...

What is the simplest model of contact mechanics for two colliding objects? If two spheres are moving towards each, when and how is a collision detected?
