Are there advantages/disadvantages to the different pixel layouts? I tried to do some searching but most of the articles just mention the importance of knowing the layout for subpixel rendering. It seems like the pixel layout doesn't really matter as long as the renderer knows which one it is.

The iPhone XR's LCD display has curved corners which trim off individual subpixels to form the curve; apps might need to know the subpixel layout to prevent incorrect colors from being displayed when drawing very thin lines near the edges of the panel.
